Rivian R1T Bed Side Repair: Why the "Unipanel" Demands a Certified Shop

A scrape on the side of a standard pickup truck is usually a quick fix. But on a Rivian R1T, damage to the rear quarter panel (the bed side) is a completely different challenge.

At Fix Auto Poway, we are a Rivian Certified Collision Center. This recent restoration of a Forest Green R1T highlights exactly why these vehicles require specialized care, distinct from standard collision repair.

The "Before": Not Just a Dent

In the "Before" photos, you can see significant impact damage dragging across the rear passenger door and onto the bed side.

Here is the catch: On a Rivian R1T, the body side is often part of a massive, continuous structure known as a "Unipanel" or "Uniside". It connects the roof rail, the door frame, and the bed side into one seamless piece of metal. You cannot just "swap out" a fender like on an old truck. Repairing this area requires high-precision techniques to ensure the metal isn't weakened.

The "During": Extreme Disassembly

This is where our certification matters most. Look closely at the "During" photo.

To properly repair the bed side, we didn't just sand down the scratch. We had to perform a major disassembly, removing the outer bed skin to access the inner structure. This level of teardown is critical for two reasons:

  1. Accessing the Structure: We need to ensure there is no hidden damage to the inner reinforcements that protect the battery pack and rear drive unit.

  2. Protecting Technology: The bed area is packed with wiring for the gear tunnel, charging ports, and rear sensors. Stripping the panel ensures we don't damage these sensitive components during the heat-treating and repair process.

The "After": Forest Green Perfection

Reassembling a Rivian requires patience and OEM-spec clips to ensure every trim piece fits tight—no rattles, no wind noise.

And then there is the paint. Forest Green is a stunning, deep metallic color. Our painters matched the factory finish perfectly, ensuring the "flop" (how the metallic flake reflects light) is identical on the cab door and the bed side. The reflection is seamless, and the truck looks as if it never left the factory.
